Cynthia S. "Cindy" Johns LabCorp Medical Technology Lakeland - Cynthia S. Johns, 64, died peacefully at home with family at her side Dec 24, 2017, after a long determined fight with cancer. Born in Kalamazoo MI Sept. 8, 1953 to Daniel & Marion (Sell) Smith. She graduated from Parchment High School 1971, BS in Medical Technology Michigan State Univ 1975 and MS from Central Michigan Univ. 1997. Cindy started her laboratory career working hospital positions at Bronson Methodist MI, Ball Memorial IN, Temple Univ PA, and LRMC. As her experience grew she moved to leadership roles with Esoterix Coagulation, Colorado Coagulation Consultants and 20 years with LabCorp. She was tireless in providing continuing education in essential medical laboratory services. Cindy was a distinguished lifetime volunteer with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) holding many posts contributing to the medical laboratory profession. Cindy was always there for family, providing care for her mother and mother in law. Never missing Christmas in VT or milestones of her nephews. She loved the summer retreats at the lake cottage in MI. Cindy easily made lifetime friends wherever she went and was often "adopted" as a family member. She volunteered frequently with the SPCA. She was also a long time loyal Bucs fan. Cindy had unwavering faith in God and was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church. She was an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and active member of the parish RCCW. Cindy is survived by her brother Randall (Lori) Smith of Essex Jct VT; 3 Nephews, Joshua (Kate) Smith Meridian, ID, Jason (Stephanie) Smith, Windham, NH, Jesse (Annette) Smith Georgia, VT. She was preceded in death by her husband of 13 years Bobby Johns in 2000, her parents, and a brother Jeffrey Smith. Cindy's family will be forever grateful to all the wonderful friends, physicians, and caregivers who were so supportive over the course of many treatments. We extend a sincere thank you. A funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday Jan 25th at 11:00am at Resurrection Catholic Church 3720 Old Hwy 37, Lakeland, FL. Internment will be held privately at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Cindy Johns Patient Champions Memorial Fund, dedicated to promoting awareness and understanding of the laboratory to educate and empower patients and their caregivers. Cindy was ASCP’s first Patient Champion, and through her story, Cindy has empowered other patients to ask the right questions and understand their treatment options. The Cindy Johns Patient Champions Memorial Fund will support Patient Champions, like Cindy, through scholarships, advocacy, education and materials that showcase the vital connection between patients and the medical laboratory.
